Reflection #5

Before this semester, I had not taken any of my LLT courses, and was unsure how to even begin to teach a mixed language classroom, which I anticipate in my future teaching. I have noticed after this class, I feel completely capable of teaching students who do not speak English. Not only have the various readings assisted me in understanding L2 student needs, the SIOP model has really increased my understanding of how to adapt different teaching methods and strategies in the classroom. I did not realize how much I have taken from the different teaching strategies and models until my TE class read a chapter on teaching second language learners last week. In our group discussion, I was able to help my class understand the challenges of teaching second language learners, and how to adapt several teaching strategies in your classroom. I showed them how simple methods of grouping, and gestures can make a huge difference. Many of the students in my TE class were thankful to have me in their group, because they were able to begin to understand how to break the barrier of a mixed classroom. I think many teachers are worried about the threat of a mixed classroom, and do not know how to respond to student needs. I think it will become increasingly important in the future for teachers to have training in teaching second language learners. I also expressed the importance of knowing your group of learners, and learning to adapt to that particular audience.
