Grammar In the Classroom

      In class we have been discussing Grammar and how to incorporate it into our future classrooms. This has made me think about the classrooms that i am in for my field placement. After discussing this topic in class i now see how important it is to language learning. I think that even in classrooms where students have english as their first language should be focusing on grammar. In the classroom i am in I do not see this happening. The children do not focus on writing activities enough and i rarely see grammar being taught or even emphasized. I know that my students are young but I still think there should be an emphasis on grammar. Why should we be focused on teaching this concept to ESL students but barely focusing on how to incorporate it into our regular classrooms. In my future classroom I am going to put a large focus on writing as well as grammar whether I am working with ESL students or not. I think there should be many opportunities for students to practice their writing skills because this is such an important thing to know for the future. Students need to have good grammar as well as writing skills in order to move past high school and into the work world. It would be very difficult to get into college or get hired at a job without these skills.
    I think in the classroom i work in now the students could really benefit from activities that we have discussed in class. I often see them focusing on the spelling of words but not on how to put words together to make proper sentences. I think it is ok for them to make mistakes but the teacher should be correcting their mistakes in order to help them improve. I would be really interested to see grammar being taught in an ESL classroom so I could become more prepared for my own future classroom.
